The 2026 Diamond League season kicked off with an absolute thriller in China on Saturday, night. Nigeria's sprint hurdling queen and world record holder, Tobi Amusan, opened her outdoor campaign with an impressive third-place finish in a heavily stacked women’s 100m hurdles final.

Fresh off capturing gold at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, just days prior, the 29-year-old shrugged off jet lag and a tight travel schedule to clock a strong season’s best time of 12.41 seconds.

Russell and Charlton Lay Down the Gauntlet

While Amusan showed incredible resilience, reigning Olympic champion Masai Russell controlled the late stages of the race. The American star blazed through the hurdles to secure victory in a stunning 12.25 seconds—setting a new meeting record and the fastest time in the world this season.

Bahamian indoor world champion Devynne Charlton exploded out of the blocks early, holding the lead before being reeled in by Russell. Charlton crossed the finish line in 12.38 seconds to claim second place, setting a brilliant new Bahamian national record.

Amusan’s Climb Back to Peak Form

Amusan’s 12.41s performance in Shanghai marks a massive leap forward from the 12.84s she clocked to win the African title earlier in the week. With her historic world record of 12.12s still standing as the time to beat globally, the Nigerian icon acknowledged that her sights are set on the long game this season.

“Everyone is looking forward to the World Championship, so am I,” Amusan remarked after the race. “With obtaining the bronze medal today as a great season opener, I am looking forward to the upcoming meetings of this season.”

Taking to social media platform 𝕏, she echoed her relentless hunger for the calendar ahead:

"Beyond grateful to God, my team, supporters, and everyone who continues to believe in me through every season. Historic feeling. Still hungry for more. The mission continues."

The elite hurdling circuit now heads south to Xiamen next week, where the rivalry is bound to heat up even further.
