The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is experiencing "sleepless nights" due to the growing political strength and popularity of the NDC’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kwankwaso detailed the NDC’s strategic preparations across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
"Peter Obi is popular in the South, and we are mobilising our people in the North. Even the President is concerned about the person of our presidential candidate, and he has been having sleepless nights because of him," Kwankwaso stated.
Key Takeaways From the Interview
-
North-South Mobilization Synergy: Kwankwaso explained that the NDC ticket bridges regional strongholds, pairing Obi’s widespread Southern appeal with active grassroots mobilization driven by the Kwankwasiyya movement in the North.
-
Presidential Reliance on Governors: Kwankwaso asserted that President Tinubu recognizes his political vulnerabilities, forcing the administration to rely heavily on state governors to maintain control ahead of 2027.
-
Defending Obi's Economic Record: Responding to recent criticisms by Vice President Kashim Shettima regarding "bogus statistics," Kwankwaso defended Obi, stating that most figures cited by the presidential candidate are accurate and reflect a deep grasp of global and local economics.
-
Policy Commitments: Kwankwaso noted that the NDC leadership is aligned on key national issues, including considering fuel subsidies and economic interventions to ease the ongoing hardship facing Nigerians.
"The Kwankwasiyya and, of course, people who believe in this country and those who are looking for a way out are supporting us. And together, we have a very formidable team," he added.
