The Nigerian Army has confirmed a deadly assault on a military base in Borno State. Tragically, five brave soldiers and three members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) lost their lives while defending the facility.
However, despite the ambush, resilient troops of Operation Hadin Kai successfully fought back, neutralised several terrorists, and maintained absolute control of the strategic base.
The 3:00 AM Ambush: Exploiting the Weather
According to an official statement issued by the spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Haruna Sani, the attack targeted the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Mandara-Girau, which operates under the 25 Brigade, Sector 2.
The insurgents launched a surprise assault at approximately 3:00 AM, deliberately choosing a time of heavy rainfall and poor visibility to try and catch the military off guard.
A Fierce Counter-Offensive
The terrorists' plan to overrun the base completely failed. Troops immediately mounted a ferocious response, engaging the attackers in intense, close-quarter combat.
"Determined troops responded with a fierce counter-offensive, decisively frustrating further incursions and inflicting casualties on the attackers," Lt. Col. Sani stated.
The Casualties and Damage:
-
The Fallen Heroes: 5 soldiers and 3 CJTF members paid the supreme price during the firefight.
-
The Wounded: Injured personnel were swiftly airlifted by the air component of Operation Hadin Kai. They are currently receiving medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
-
Equipment: Some military hardware sustained damage during the heavy exchange of gunfire.
"An Act of Desperation"
The military has characterized this pre-dawn raid not as a sign of strength, but as a desperate move by terrorist groups crumbling under the pressure of ongoing offensive operations in the North-East.
The Forward Operating Base remains firmly under the control of Nigerian troops, who are currently conducting "exploitation operations" to flush out any fleeing insurgents in the general area. To guarantee the safety of local communities, additional troops and heavy combat assets have already been deployed across the theatre.
