A dark cloud has fallen over the Nigerian military community following a devastating ambush by suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Sokoto State. The attack, which claimed the lives of seven soldiers, has left a particularly heartbreaking trail, as one of the fallen heroes, Lieutenant Abdullahi Ismail Chafe, was reportedly set to tie the knot in just a few weeks.

The tragedy occurred on Saturday evening, May 16, 2026, at Runji village—roughly 10 kilometers from Illela town in the Illela Local Government Area.

The Setup: A Successful Mission Turns Deadly

According to local sources, the troops had initially launched a successful, heavy-handed assault on a Lakurawa terrorist hideout using three military vehicles. The operation was believed to have inflicted severe casualties on the armed group.

However, disaster struck on their return journey.

One of the military operational vehicles developed a mechanical fault, forcing the convoy to halt by the roadside in Illela to carry out repairs.

Ambushed by 90 Heavily Armed Terrorists

While the soldiers were working to fix the faulty vehicle, the terrorists—who had mobilized to retaliate for the earlier destruction of their camp—trailed the troops.

"The assailants stormed the area on about 30 motorcycles, with each motorcycle carrying three heavily armed fighters. They met the soldiers where the faulty vehicle was being repaired and a fierce gun battle ensued." — Local Source

An alternative account suggests that the soldiers actually abandoned the broken-down vehicle and were trekking back to their base, guided by a local civilian who knew the terrain, when the terrorists struck.

The Casualties and a Heartbreaking Loss

While initial confusion surrounded the exact death toll, multiple residents confirmed seeing seven corpses of military personnel at the scene, alongside their civilian guide. One resident noted that six bodies were recovered immediately, while a seventh soldier's body was discovered in the nearby bush the following morning.

Among those tragically killed was Lieutenant Abdullahi Ismail Chafe. Family and friends have since revealed the heartbreaking detail that the young officer was scheduled to be married on June 13, 2026.

Military Response: "Aggressive Operations Ongoing"

A senior military officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the unfortunate encounter near Illela but maintained that tactical reinforcements have already been dispatched.

"Yes, we recorded a regrettable casualty over the weekend around Illela. However, immediate tactical reinforcements have been deployed to the area, while aggressive intelligence-led operations are ongoing to track and neutralize the terrorists responsible."

In accordance with military protocol, the official identities of the fallen heroes will not be formally released until their next of kin have been fully notified.

The military has urged the public and the media to focus on the immense sacrifices of the troops and to respect the privacy of the grieving families during this incredibly difficult time.
