If you are planning your holidays, preparing for the pilgrimage, or getting ready to celebrate with family, here is everything you need to know about the upcoming key dates.
The Key Dates for 2026
According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah officially begins on Monday, May 18, 2026. This sets the stage for the pinnacle events of the Islamic calendar later this month:
-
Tuesday, May 26 (Dhul Hijjah 9): The Day of Arafat
-
Wednesday, May 27 (Dhul Hijjah 10): Eid Al-Adha begins
The Significance of the Day of Arafat
Marking the absolute pinnacle of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, the Day of Arafat will take place on Tuesday, May 26. On this profound day, millions of pilgrims from every corner of the globe will gather at Mount Arafat, just outside the holy city of Mecca, dedicating their day to intense prayer, repentance, and deep reflection. For Muslims not performing the pilgrimage, fasting on this day is a highly encouraged tradition.
Understanding Eid Al-Adha
Starting the very next day, Wednesday, May 27, Muslims worldwide will come together to celebrate Eid Al-Adha (the Festival of Sacrifice).
What does Eid Al-Adha commemorate? The holiday honors the profound devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), who was willing to sacrifice his son in ultimate obedience to God. In recognition of his faith, God provided a ram to be sacrificed in his son's place. Today, the holiday is celebrated with communal prayers, acts of charity, and the sharing of meat with family, friends, and those in need.
The Pillar of Hajj
The commencement of Dhul Hijjah also marks the climax of Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam. As a spiritual duty, every Muslim who possesses the physical and financial means is expected to undertake this life-altering pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.
