The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced its primary elections across the state to elect its standard-bearers for upcoming polls. To ensure a transparent and seamless process, the party has deployed over 1,000 electoral officials across all 305 political wards in the state.
Confirming the development on Saturday, the Spokesperson for the Imo APC, Dr. Jones Onwuasoanya, stated that the exercise was already actively underway at various ward collation centres.
Direct Primaries and Strategic Oversight
The party is utilizing the direct primary method for this internal election, a system structured to ensure the process aligns fully with constitutional requirements and standard electoral guidelines.
To maintain the credibility of the votes, the APC leadership has established a strong supervision framework:
-
INEC Supervision: The 1,000+ deployed internal party officials are conducting the election under the direct supervision of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).
-
High-Level Committees: Specialized panels have arrived in Imo State to oversee the process and manage disputes. The House of Representatives Primary Election Committee is chaired by Rear Admiral Williams Kayode, while the Appeal Committee is led by Engr. Tuoyo Omatsuli.
-
Enhanced Security: Robust security measures have been deployed across the ward collation centres to protect party members and officials involved in the voting process.
Commitments to Transparency
Dr. Onwuasoanya emphasized that the state party leadership is fully dedicated to a democratic process where "the votes of all Party members shall count."
As the selection process intensifies ahead of the forthcoming general elections, the APC leadership has called on all aspirants, stakeholders, and party faithful to maintain absolute order and cooperate fully with the designated electoral committees on the ground.
