Popular Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon has weighed in on the evergreen debate surrounding gender roles, marriage, and financial dynamics in modern relationships—and his take is surprisingly refreshing.

Speaking during a lively session on the popular Tea With Tay podcast, the actor revealed that he has absolutely no issues with a woman being the primary provider in a home. In fact, Deyemi joked that he would gladly swap his demanding acting schedule for a life of leisure if his wife ever steps up as the ultimate breadwinner.

"If She’s Making Millions of Dollars, I’m Staying Home"

Deyemi hilariously explained that if his wife's income ever skyrockets into the multi-million dollar bracket annually, he would have no problem throwing in the towel on his career to support her from home.

"If my wife starts earning millions of dollars every year, I will gladly relax and become a househusband instead of stressing myself with acting jobs," the actor joked, choosing peace and luxury over ego.

Why Many Men Struggle with Higher-Earning Wives

Taking a more serious turn, Deyemi addressed why the dynamic of a wife earning more than her husband causes so much friction in African homes. He noted that money fundamentally changes relationship dynamics, and many men simply aren't wired to handle it.

According to him, the friction usually comes from a place of insecurity:

  • Over-Sensitivity: Many men become deeply uncomfortable and hypersensitive the moment they feel the financial weight of the home shifting to the woman.

  • The Ego Trap: Traditional expectations place the burden of provision solely on the man, making it difficult for some husbands to accept a support role without feeling diminished.

Deyemi, however, believes that a marriage is a partnership, and whoever has the financial upper hand at any given time should be allowed to carry the team without judgment.
