A National Disgrace" – Peter Obi Slams Tinubu Over Ukraine’s Food Donation to Nigeria

The political temperature just went up a notch. Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has delivered a scathing assessment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, pointing to a recent grain donation from war-torn Ukraine as a symbol of Nigeria's deep economic mismanagement.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on News Central TV, Obi raised serious alarms over the country’s current trajectory, arguing that Nigeria has grown steadily poorer, more heavily indebted, and increasingly unsafe since the current administration took office in 2023.
The Ukraine Contrast: War-Torn vs. Mismanaged
The most striking punchline of Obi's critique centered on international aid. He expressed profound embarrassment that Ukraine—a nation currently locked in a brutal war of survival with Russia—is still capable of exporting agricultural goods and donating grains to a peaceful, resource-rich Nigeria.
"It is disheartening that our once economically confident nation, blessed with vast arable land and abundant natural resources, now relies on a war-torn Ukraine for food assistance," Obi remarked.
A Breakdown of Obi's Core Charges
During the broadcast, the former Anambra State Governor highlighted three main failures driving the nation's current crises:
-
The Insecurity Epidemic: Obi emphasized that widespread insecurity has driven Nigerian farmers off their lands, effectively crippling local food production and triggering skyrocketing inflation.
-
Excessive Borrowing: He accused the Tinubu administration of over-reliance on foreign loans without visible, productive returns to back up the debt.
-
Flawed Agricultural Policies: Obi claimed the government's current food strategies are completely ineffective and appear incapable of fixing the structural issues behind nationwide hunger.
Flipping the Script from "Consumption to Production"
Reiterating his long-standing economic philosophy, Obi insisted that Nigeria’s path out of humiliation lies in an aggressive reordering of national priorities.
He noted that while Ukraine actively cultivates over 60% of its arable land despite being under military siege, Nigeria leaves over 60% of its fertile land completely uncultivated. To reverse this trend, Obi called for immediate, massive investments in security and local farming to transition Nigeria from a nation of consumption to one of intense production.
