Fintech giant OPay has debunked viral social media reports claiming that it has discontinued the use of phone numbers as account numbers and fully transitioned to standard bank account numbers.

The clarification follows a post on X (formerly Twitter) by user Israel Gharee, who advised users to visit physical OPay agents to update their account configurations.

> *"OPay is no longer using phone numbers as account numbers. They’re now issuing standard account numbers, so if you’re still using your phone number as your OPay account number, hurry to an OPay agent to get yours updated,"* the viral post claimed.

### Company Clarifies Account Structure

Responding to the viral claims, an OPay official confirmed that the rumor is completely inaccurate, noting that users on the platform had already begun debunking the post in the comment section.

The official emphasized that any major policy updates, system upgrades, or changes to account structures are always communicated directly through official company channels.

> *"I have seen the tweet. But even from the comments, you will see people are already correcting him. If we have any update or news, we will always share through our communication channels,"* the official stated.

### Second Shutdown Rumor Debunked in Months

The recent mis information follows an earlier fake report claiming that OPay would shut down operations permanently starting September 1, 2026.

OPay quickly dismissed the shutdown rumors at the time, reassuring its millions of active customers that its digital payment systems, mobile app, and financial services remain fully operational and secure across Nigeria.

Customers and users are advised to ignore unverified social media updates and rely exclusively on official OPay notifications, verified social media handles, or in-app customer support for accurate information.
