A routine anti-narcotics operation turned fatal in Obiaruku community, Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, after an officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) drowned in the River Ethiope while attempting to apprehend an escaping drug suspect.
A second officer involved in the pursuit was rescued from the water and rushed to a local hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.
How the Incident Happened

Suspect’s Escape: According to community sources, NDLEA operatives had apprehended a suspected drug offender and were escorting him near the River Ethiope Bridge. The suspect suddenly broke free and leapt into the river to evade arrest.

Fatal Pursuit: In an effort to recapture the suspect, officers jumped into the river after him. During the chase, one officer encountered difficulty and drowned, while another was saved by locals and emergency responders.
-
Suspect Escapes: The fleeing suspect and other individuals in the area managed to swim across and escape through the river.
Traditional Rites Performed Before Remains Released
Following the retrieval of the deceased officer's body from the river, local tradition in Obiaruku came into play. Community customs mandate that specific traditional rites be conducted whenever a person drowns in the River Ethiope before the body can be officially removed.
Community sources confirmed that the mandatory customs—which included providing a goat and other symbolic items—were fulfilled before the remains were released to NDLEA authorities.
NDLEA Launches Investigation
A senior official with the agency confirmed the incident and stated that a full investigation has been launched to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the officer's death and the security breaches during the operation.
As of press time, the NDLEA has not officially published the names of the deceased officer, the hospitalized operative, or the fleeing suspect.
