A major power disruption has hit parts of Northern Nigeria following the collapse of Transmission Tower T367 along the 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi line.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, September 8, attributing the structural failure to heavy rainstorms and severe winds.
Incident Details and Initial Response
-
Sequence of Events: The 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission line (2KNJ-BRK1) first tripped at 10:44 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026. A restoration attempt at 11:07 p.m. failed, prompting linesmen from the Birnin Kebbi Sub-Region to patrol the line and locate the damaged tower.
-
Force Majeure Declared: Due to the physical destruction caused by the natural disaster, TCN officially declared force majeure on the affected corridor.
-
Power Rerouting: To cushion the impact, TCN has rerouted electricity to the Talata Mafara-Sokoto corridor via an alternative route—the 132kV Zaria-Funtua-Gusau line coming from the Kaduna-Mando axis.
-
Ongoing Repairs: Mobilization of personnel, heavy machinery, and replacement materials is currently underway to rebuild Tower T367 and restore full bulk power transmission along the corridor.
TCN apologized to electricity distribution companies and affected consumers for the disruption, assuring the public that emergency recovery teams are working to complete repairs as quickly as possible.
