After a tense night of social media speculation and anxiety, activists Randy Peter and Precious Oruche (widely known as Mama Pee) have regained their freedom following a grueling 11-hour session at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja.
While the duo has been released, the ordeal isn't entirely over—they have been instructed to return to the commission for further engagement today, Thursday, July 16, 2026.
The 11-Hour Ordeal: How It Unfolded
The activists voluntarily honored an invitation by the anti-graft agency on Tuesday, but what was expected to be a routine visit turned into a marathon questioning session.
According to their colleague, Justice Crack, who accompanied them to the EFCC headquarters and kept the public updated via his π (formerly Twitter) handle:
-
1:00 PM (Tuesday): Randy Peter and Mama Pee arrived at the EFCC office.
-
The Waiting Game: Justice Crack waited in the car park for several hours, eventually sharing a video of the wait online as hours ticked by with no sign of the activists.
-
12:00 AM (Wednesday): After 11 hours behind closed doors, the duo was finally allowed to leave.
"My dear brother, @Peter4Nigeria, and my sister, @MamaPee_ were invited by the @officialEFCC. I personally accompanied them there on the afternoon of 15th July 2026, at about 1:00 p.m. It was a very long day. They were eventually released at around 12:00 a.m. and were asked to return the following day, 16th July 2026. For now, everything is fine." — Justice Crack
Social Media Panic Over "Missing" Activists
Before Justice Crack confirmed their midnight release, anxiety had heavily permeated Nigerian social media. When the activists didn't emerge after several hours, many feared they had been detained or secretly arrested.
The alarm was first raised on π by Esther Umoh, the 2023 presidential campaign photographer for Peter Obi. She expressed concern over their prolonged detention, stating:
"@MamaPee__ and @Peter4Nigeria were invited by the EFCC in Abuja, and as respectful citizens, they honored the invitation today. But as I type this, they are yet to be released by the commission."
Her post sparked widespread speculation and demands for their immediate release, which were eventually quelled by the news of their midnight exit.
Unanswered Questions
As of now, a massive cloud of mystery surrounds the interrogation. The EFCC has not publicly disclosed the reason behind the invitation, nor have they issued an official statement detailing the outcome of the questioning or the nature of the investigation.
With Randy Peter and Mama Pee scheduled to return to the EFCC headquarters today, all eyes remain on the anti-graft agency for clarity on what exactly prompted this high-profile probe.
