The axe has fallen in Dakar. The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has officially sacked national team manager Pape Thiaw and his entire technical staff following the Teranga Lions' dramatic and agonizing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision was finalized on Saturday, July 11, 2026, during an emergency Executive Committee meeting, following what the federation termed a "thorough evaluation of the sporting results and prospects of the national team."

Five Minutes of Madness Cost Thiaw His Job

While any Round of 32 exit hurts, the way Senegal went out is what ultimately sealed Thiaw’s fate.

Playing against Belgium in Seattle, the Teranga Lions looked firmly on their way to the Round of 16, holding a comfortable 2-0 lead with just five minutes left on the clock. In a catastrophic defensive collapse, Senegal conceded two late goals in rapid succession, forcing the game into extra time. The heartbreak was completed when Belgium’s Youri Tielemans slotted home a late penalty at the death, sending Senegal packing with a bitter 3-2 defeat.

A Turbulent World Cup Campaign

Thiaw, who took the reins in December 2024, endured a highly inconsistent tournament in North America. Senegal’s campaign was rocky from the jump:

  • Group Stage Struggles: They lost their opening two Group I matches against powerhouses France and Norway.

  • The Great Escape: A resounding 5-0 thrashing of Iran in their final group game miraculously saved them, allowing Senegal to squeak into the knockout rounds as the lowest-ranked of the best third-placed teams.

Ultimately, the federation decided that squeezing through the back door and blowing a two-goal lead wasn't up to the standard expected of one of Africa’s premier footballing nations.

The Official Statement from the FSF

In an official press release, the federation made it clear that a total structural reset is required ahead of future continental qualifiers:

"The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) informs the public that following the meeting of the Executive Committee held this Saturday, July 11, 2026, it was decided to initiate a procedure to terminate the functions of the national coach, Mr Pape Thiaw, as well as his entire technical staff... The Executive Committee deemed it necessary to initiate this procedure in the best interests of Senegalese football."

The hunt is now officially on for a new tactical mastermind to lead the Teranga Lions into their next era.

Was the federation too harsh on Thiaw given that they made it out of a brutal group, or was sacking him the right call after that legendary tactical collapse against Belgium? Sound off in the comments below!
