Prominent Nigerian activist and chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aisha Yesufu, has opened up about her decision to turn down an automatic offer to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives.
According to Yesufu, her rejection of the political lifeline stems from a deep-seated commitment to fairness, revealing that 20 other aspirants had already purchased nomination forms and were actively campaigning for the exact same position. Joining the race late through an engineered ticket, she asserted, would unfairly sideline candidates who had already invested significant time, money, and effort.
The disclosure was made during a public lecture on citizens’ participation in governance at Veritas University in Abuja on Thursday.
Standing Against a "Criminal" System
Reflecting on the offer, Yesufu made it clear that she refused to benefit from a flawed political process that undermines internal democracy.
“About 20 people had picked up forms for the ticket, and I was not going to be part of irregularities. I was not going to be part of that system even though it was going to benefit me."
“The reason I didn’t take it was because of the process. There were about 20 competent people from whom money had been collected during the process who would be short-changed.”
Describing the internal party arrangement as both unjust and "criminal," Yesufu questioned why political entities that claim to be guided by the law would engage in such underhanded maneuvers. She maintained that personal integrity outweighs any political title.
“I have no problem with losing. I would rather stand with ordinary people than pursue titles and honours through an unfair process. That is how I have always lived my life.”
A Call to Action for Nigerian Youth
Beyond sharing her personal political stance, the activist used the platform at Veritas University to challenge young Nigerians to step up and reshape the nation's political landscape.
She urged the youth to deepen their involvement in governance, emphasizing that true political participation must go far beyond simply showing up to vote on election day.
What is your take on Aisha Yesufu's decision? Do you think more Nigerian politicians need to adopt this level of principle, or did she miss an opportunity to make a change from the inside? Let us know in the comments below!
